i'm trippin', i'm trippin!

Not what you think...I'm goin' on a trip, ya sillies!!

Chicago this week, Laughlin and Grand Canyon next week.

I had a much longer blog ready a few hours ago but the power went out in the neighborhood for two hours. With it went my instant musings on why Filipinos can't do low-carb. Oh well, we'll save that for another day.

I'm outties. See you in at least 2 weeks.

straight from my old haunting place...

I'm writing to you from a computer lab in Steinhaus Hall at good ol' UCI. Down the hall is where I used have Neurobio lab...good times. Good times.

Surprised a couple of people today, which was nice. There was Fr. Pat from Interfaith and my old boss Mike from the Derm Lab. Talked to Dr. Clecak about alternative medicine, why I hate LA, and that I should visit people more often.

Gee, I missed this place. <=) A lot of "I-used-to-do-this-and-that-over-there" thoughts through my head. I liked it. I felt more like a tourist than an alumnus with all the new stuff they've been building, but that's ok.

***************

Was it just me, or is America getting more screwed up in their idea of talent?? The last time I looked, I thought that American Idol was about singing exceptionally well. When LaToya sang her farewell song, all I thought was how Jasmine would NEVER be able to pull off something like that. I was appalled that Jasmine was in the TOP 2. I know that a lot of Asians and Filipinos are probably applauding, and the pinay in me is proud that she made it far enough, BUT let's not forget what we're looking for. SINGING TALENT. I mean, versatile singing talent. Being able to pull off only some songs well and choke on difficult Disco diva songs is not American Idol grade talent.

My predictions for American Idol...

1. Fantasia - Definitely safe. I like her because she's different from the other contestants, even though she sounds a little like Macy Gray. But the audience loves her.

2. LaToya - She's really good, but her first song choice wasn't too great. She pulled it off, but you know that feeling when you buy an entire album of a really good artist? Each song is good, but you still wanna skip a couple of them. Yeah.

3. Diana - I feel like pinching her cheeks..adorable. But I don't think she's that great as a performer. She can hit the high notes, but I'm always scared that she's gonna sound weak in the next...definitely not the problem with the above 2.

4. Jasmine - Speaking of sounding weak...what a disappointment with my fellow pinay. It was terrible..It's that feeling of unease when you watch someone sing that they're gonna mess up the next line. Or when you watch a skating competition and wonder when the contestant's gonna fall. Then when they trip over and over...

We'll see what happens tomorrow ...

Back to my personal statement.

my to-do list for the week...

1. Nag journal editors with a slice of my research to see if they might like to see more.

2. Start thinking of what to pack for next week (Chicago and the Grand Canyon...fun!)

3. Collect letters of rec and transcripts from good ol' UCI.

4. Send out invites for friend's baby shower.

5. Personal statement, personal statement, personal statement for the master's program at UCLA. Time is ticking and my mind is blocked...=/
